Liverpool will sign James Milner on a free transfer on July 1 once the England midfielder’s contract at Manchester City expires.
Liverpool says Thursday that the club has agreed personal terms with the 29-year-old Milner, with the deal to be completed after a medical examination.
The arrival of Milner — a hard-working, versatile midfielder — will help fill the gap vacated by long-time Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who is leaving after 17 years to join the Los Angeles Galaxy.
City tried to retain the services of Milner, who became more of a regular in the team last season. Milner reportedly wants to play more in central midfield.
