European champions Portugal claimed their first win at the Confederation Cup after they edged tournament hosts Russia 1-0 here on Wednesday.
FIFA Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo headed in the winner for Portugal in the eighth minute in the Group A match which sent them to the top of the group standings with four points.
In other match, Mexico came from behind to beat New Zealand 2-1 in Sochi. New Zealand’s forward Chirs Wood scored in the first half, but the highly spirited Mexico leveled the score through Raul Jimenez on 54 minutes and Oribe Peralta sealed the win less than 20 minutes later.

Mexico now are on four points, which means Russia (3 points) must fight for a win on Saturday in order to reach the next stage.
