Gundogan have had a series of fitness issues in the past. He missed the 2014 World Cup with a back injury and was out for several months between August 2013 and October 2014.
According to recent transfer rumours, Manchester City is also interested in sign the paceman under Pep Guardiola to bolster their midfield.
Apart from the Euro Cup Campaign, Gundogan will also miss the crucial DFB Pokal final against Bayern Munich and the remaining Bundesliga matches at Frankfurt and at home against Cologne.
“Of course this is a setback for all of us, but above all it is very bitter for Ilkay himself,” said German national Coach Joachim Löw.
