The Charlton brothers

The footballing world is rocked after the news that Manchester United legend Bobby Charlton has passed away at the age of 86.

He was one of the few survivors of the Munich air crash and his death causes a huge void in fans’ heart as he, along with Dennis Law and George Best stands tall as the “Holy trinity” of Red Devils.

Bobby Charlton’s brother Jack Charlton is back in the focus again after the the 1966 World Cup winner’s unfortunate passing.

A legend in his own right, the two had a difficult relationship. Here’s a look back at who was Bobby Charlton’s brother Jack Charlton and how the relationship turned sour, now that both men will be reconciling their differences in heaven.

Bobby Charlton’s brother Jack Charlton

When Bobby Charlton was the nation’s hero as his goals were bringing it “home”, the squad had a defender who was going about his job unassumingly.

Jack Charlton, Bobby Charlton’s brother was part of the 1966 squad that made history.

A 6’3″ defender, it is no wonder Bobby Charlton was such a great attacker because he was up against Jack Charlton in defence from his childhood.

In addition to his playing career, he also had a successful managerial career, as he guided the Republic of Ireland team to two World Cups and one European Championship appearance.

Jack Charlton passed away in 2020 at the age of 85.

He is survived by his wife Pat Kemp, to whom he got married to in 1958.

A relationship turned sour

The brothers weren’t on the best of terms due to family issues the origin of which dates back to 1996.

In 1996, Jack Charlton accused his brother Bobby of not visiting their mother before her death and cut the cord with him.

Sir Bobby Charlton said that his wife didn’t get along with their mother and he had chosen to take his wife’s side in the ordeal.

It caused a huge uproar at the time but time healed wounds to a great degree.

In 2020 when Jack passed away, Sir Bobby Charlton left a heartfelt note on his wreath which read, “Rest in peace, Jack. Sending our deepest condolences”.

He was not able to attend his funeral as his own health was deteriorating at the time, but the ignorance was no longer there.

While the news of Sir Bobby passing away is undoubtedly a huge loss to world football, the brothers will now meet in heaven to reminisce about the time they “brought it home”.
