Favourites for every competition they play in every year, far stronger than any other club in the league financially and on the pitch, with a squad that could be the envy of Europe.
Surely, the Bayern Munich job would be one of the most coveted job in world football? On account of recent events, probably not!
Bayern are set to do a U-turn and “appoint” Thomas Tuchel on an extended contract after being burned by several manager in their search to replace the German.
It ends an embarrassing saga for the Bundesliga heavyweights as managers have realised that dealing with the politicking and upper management of Bayern is not worth the hassle, especially when success is expected, not celebrated.
Here’s how Bayern’s search for a new head coach led them back to the person they already have in charge-
Failed offensive charm for Julian Nagelsmann
In some ways, this search was destined to fail from the beginning. When Tuchel announced his departure, the first manager Bayern looked towards was the same man they fired citing that the “treble was in danger”.
Nagelsmann was purring at Germany and Bayern thought they could tempt him back with additional power and influence, especially with Euros potentially providing a nice ending to his international management spell.
It wasn’t to be. Nagelsmann wouldn’t be burned twice by the lustre and promise of Bayern and he eventually signed a new contract to stay with the national team until the 2026 World Cup. Bayern were left scrambling, not the first time it would happen.
Ralf Rangnick’s rejection
Bayern’s desperation was on full display now as they tried to appoint Austrian national team manager and Germany football’s “professor”, Ralf Rangnick. He is famous for demanding total control of a football club and the fact that Bayern were ready to appoint him despite the club being notoriously strict about managerial responsibilities was a clear sign.
In a brutal blow, Rangnick thought he had a good thing going with Austria and didn’t want a repeat of the shenanigans at Manchester United. Bayern were rejected again.
One man’s trash…
Links to Erik ten Hag emerged and they baffled Red Devils fans. The Dutchman was flailing and failing at Old Trafford and now Bayern were considering to appoint him? The desperation was high and the organisation dysfunctional plus injury situation provided mitigating factors for Bayern.
However, with Ten Hag’s contract going till 2025, even a beleaguered Dutchman proclaimed he intended to see out his contact as long as he wasn’t sacked. Back to Tuchel we go on our knees.
